Timeline of Events
Referral for Consultation
- Your family physician or specialist will make a referral to the office
- Once the referral has been received, you will be contacted with a consultation date and time
Consultation Appointment
- You will be seen in the office on the 7th floor of the Diamond Health Care Centre (DHCC)
- Your initial investigations will be reviewed with you and your disease process explained in detail
- A custom care plan will be created for you, including one or more of:
- Further investigations
- Consent for surgery and subsequent evaluation in the Preoperative Care Clinic
- On-going surveillance
Surgery
- Operations are performed at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) with a dedicated thoracic operative team
- You will come to the Preoperative Care Centre (PCC) on the day of surgery where you will meet your surgical team
- Once the operation is complete, you will recover from anesthesia in the Post-Operative Care Unit (PACU)
Post-Operative Recovery
- After you have recovered from anesthesia, you will be transferred from PACU to the T12 Chest Centre (12th floor)
- You will engage with a multi-disciplinary team of healthcare professionals who will help you recover from surgery and get you home, including:
- Post-operative pain team
- Physiotherapists
- Respiratory therapists
- Occupational therapists
- Dieticians
- Patient care coordinators
Post-Operative Follow-Up
- After discharge from hospital, you will be seen again in the office for a review of your:
- Post-operative course
- Surgical pathology report
- X-ray
- Further follow-up including surveillance CT scans will be arranged as necessary
